Who Is This Book For?
The authors make no assumptions about the background of the book’s readers other than that you are
working software developers interested in practical solutions to real-world problems. This book explains
how to use enabling technologies to create new kinds of distributed systems with features rivaling desk-
top systems. Whether your skills are in Web development, server architectures, or agile languages, you
should find value in this book.
Given the fact that the examples are written in Python, Java, and Ruby on Rails, it is best if you have
some familiarity with one of these languages. We do assume you have some experience developing and
deploying Web applications, and can read basic UMLdiagrams. Finally, you should be familiar with
basic database management operations, although any required database administration steps are clearly
outlined in each chapter.
